India AI Brief Issue #9 7 Jun 2026 Briefing + Stacks

The Indian SME AI stack:
three automations, under ₹2,500.

Forget the hype. This week is for the shop owner, the agency founder, the D2C operator. Three working AI stacks for real SME problems — WhatsApp leads, GST invoices, Hindi content — with honest INR pricing. Plus a data law with ₹250 crore teeth, and the WhatsApp bill change nobody flagged.

The Lead

Your competitor isn't smarter. They just automated three things.

There's a quiet gap opening between Indian small businesses right now. It isn't about who has the best product or the biggest ad budget. It's about who replied to the 10:30pm WhatsApp enquiry, who generated a GST-compliant invoice without re-typing it, and who posted in Hindi every day this week without a marketing team.

None of that requires a developer or a five-figure budget anymore. It requires three small automations, the right tools, and an afternoon. This issue is the build guide — fact-checked, with real rupee costs, and with the honest caveats most "best AI tools" lists skip.

But first, two things every Indian SME owner should know this week: one is a law with real penalties, and one is a price change that already hit your WhatsApp bill.

The Briefing

Three things moving this week

New arrivals, new rules, new developments — filtered for what actually matters to a business owner, not a headline writer.

01
New Rule
The DPDP clock is now ticking — and it applies to you even if you're a two-person shop

India's Digital Personal Data Protection Rules were notified in November 2025. Here's the part most SMEs miss: if you collect even a customer's name, phone number or email, you are a "Data Fiduciary" under the Act — regardless of your size. The Consent Manager framework is expected to go live around November 2026, with full enforcement around May 2027. Penalties run up to ₹250 crore. You don't need to panic, but you do need a plan: know what data you collect, why, and how someone can ask you to delete it. Soft enforcement is the window to get ready.

02
Quiet Change
Your WhatsApp bill changed on 1 January 2026 — and you probably weren't told

Meta shifted WhatsApp Business API charging from per-conversation to per-template-message pricing, effective 1 January 2026. For high-volume senders this can be cheaper and clearer; for others it can quietly raise costs. Service messages inside the 24-hour customer window remain free. If you run broadcasts or order updates through a provider like AiSensy or Interakt, it's worth pulling your last two invoices and checking whether your per-message math still works. Most owners never look.

03
Coming Soon
WhatsApp voice calling for businesses is real — but not quite in your hands yet

The WhatsApp Business Calling API hit general availability on 1 July 2025, letting customers tap a button in a chat and call your business over data — no separate phone line, no IVR maze. The catch for SMEs: access rolled out through enterprise providers first, and broad self-serve availability via SMB-focused Indian providers hasn't fully landed yet. The practical takeaway: set up your WhatsApp messaging automation now, so you're first in line to add voice the moment your provider switches it on.

Three Tools

Three tools worth your time

One tool, one job, one honest reason it earns its place in an Indian SME's stack. No affiliate-driven picks — these are here because they work.

Zoho Books GST & Invoicing
From ₹749/month · billed in INR · free tier for businesses under ₹25L turnover

For any SME drowning in manual invoice entry and GST reconciliation. It's an Indian product, GST-native, and handles e-invoicing and GSTR filing without you re-typing line items into a spreadsheet at month-end.

The India angleBuilt for Indian tax workflows from the ground up — GSTIN validation, HSN codes, and e-invoice generation are native, not bolted on. Pricing is in rupees, so no USD-conversion surprises.
Murf AI Hindi Voiceover
~₹1,600/month (Creator) · free plan ≈ 10 min lifetime, no downloads · billed in USD

For SME owners making Reels, ads or explainer videos who can't afford a voice artist for every script. Good-quality Hindi, Tamil and Telugu voices with word-level control over pace and emphasis.

The India angleOver 70% of your customers think in their mother tongue. Murf's Hindi voices are genuinely usable for marketing. Honest caveat: the free tier is a demo only, and Murf bills in USD — factor in the conversion.
BotPenguin WhatsApp Support
From ~$15/month (≈₹1,250) + Meta message charges · free "Baby" plan to start

For WhatsApp-first businesses that lose enquiries after hours. A no-code chatbot that qualifies leads, answers FAQs and sends payment reminders, with live-agent handoff when a human is needed.

The India angleIndian-built and multilingual — handles Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and Marathi conversations. Your customers don't email; they WhatsApp. This meets them there, around the clock.
Three Stacks

Three stacks you can build this week

Each one targets a specific, expensive SME problem. Exact tools, exact steps, honest monthly cost in rupees. Pick one, build it this weekend.

Stack 01 · The problem
You're losing WhatsApp leads at 10:30pm
A customer messages after hours, nobody replies, they buy from whoever answered first. Every unanswered night-time enquiry is revenue walking out the door.
1
AiSensy Indian
Set up the WhatsApp Business API and an auto-reply flow that greets the customer instantly, captures their name and intent, and qualifies the lead. From ₹1,500/month.
2
Make.com Affiliate partner
Route every qualified lead automatically — push it to your sales WhatsApp, tag it, and trigger a follow-up reminder if no human replies within an hour. Core plan ≈ ₹750/month.
3
Google Sheets Free
Every lead lands in one dated sheet — source, intent, status. Now you can actually see your pipeline instead of scrolling chat history. Free.
Realistic monthly cost ~₹2,250/month Plus Meta's per-message charges, which depend on your volume. Start on the lowest tier and scale only when the leads justify it.
Why Make.com sits in two of these stacks

It's the cheapest serious automation glue you can buy

Make connects your tools without code — WhatsApp to Sheets, invoices to Zoho, forms to email. The Core plan is about ₹750/month and handles thousands of workflow runs. One honest note: since August 2025 it bills in "credits" (one per step), so build lean flows and avoid unnecessary branches.

Stack 02 · The problem
GST invoices eat two hours of your day
Manually keying invoice data into your books, every single day, is the most expensive way to spend an owner's time. It's also where errors and missed input-tax-credit creep in.
1
Zoho Books Indian
Use its built-in capture and GST-native engine to record purchase and sales invoices, validate GSTINs, and prep GSTR filings. From ₹749/month.
2
Make.com Affiliate partner
Automate the hand-off: when an invoice arrives by email, extract the details and push them into Zoho Books, then file the email away. Core ≈ ₹750/month.
3
Gmail Free
The trigger and the paper trail. A label-based inbox means every processed invoice is auto-confirmed and archived, searchable at audit time. Free.
Realistic monthly cost ~₹1,500/month Higher volumes (thousands of invoices/month) may warrant dedicated OCR like Nanonets, which is enterprise-priced on request. For most SMEs, the Zoho stack is the right starting point.
Stack 03 · The problem
You post once a month and lose to brands that post daily
No marketing team, no content calendar, no time. So your competitors — who post consistently in Hindi — own the feed and the mindshare in your town.
1
ChatGPT Free tier
Generate a month of content in one sitting — a 30-day calendar, captions in Hindi and English, and hooks tailored to your product. Free tier is enough to start.
2
Murf AI Optional paid
Turn the best scripts into Hindi voiceovers for Reels and Shorts without hiring a voice artist. Creator ≈ ₹1,600/month (free tier is demo-only).
3
Canva Free tier
Drop captions and voiceovers onto on-brand templates. AI background removal and resize handle the fiddly bits. Free tier covers most SME needs.
Realistic monthly cost ₹0 – ₹1,600/month Fully free if you skip AI voiceovers and record audio yourself. The Murf cost only kicks in when you want studio-grade Hindi narration at scale.
📸 The one thing worth screenshotting this week
"If you collect a customer's phone number, the DPDP Act already applies to you. The ₹250 crore penalty is for the big players — but the consent habits you build now are what protect a small business later."
One small ask
